Career Options in Banking, Financial Services and Insurance - Sep 2011


Rotary Club of Secunderabad West, through its Rotary Seva Trust, jointly in association with Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan conducted the seminar on Career Options in Banking, Financial Services and Insurance Sector on 18th Sep 2011. The purpose of this seminar is to enlighten the youth regarding the opportunities available in this sector and the skills required by the industry. This will help the youth in making an informed choice regarding their career.

In India, numerous graduates/post graduates are being produced every year but they are not directly employable intothe industry as they lack thepractical skills. It is important for the industry/ educational institutions / students that we produce are industry ready professionals- who can easily get a Job and get absorbed into the Industry. This Seminar particularly addresses this Social issue.  Also this is a great way to reach out to the youngergeneration, wherein they are able to visibly see the benefit of being associated with Rotary. It is a Win - Win situation for all (Industry, Educational Institutions, Students and Rotary).
 
The uniqueness of this seminar is that it covers Rotary's Four avenues of service  - Young Generation Service, Vocational Service, Club Service and Community service.

Theseminar was conducted in association with Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan. The principle sponsor for the event was Axis Bank and the other co-sponsors were State Bank of Hyderabad and Andhra Bank.

Thisparticular sector (BFSI) has been chosen since the banking industry is on the verge of an explosive growth. Many new banks are expected  to come on the scene in the coming couple of years. Similarly, it is well-known that Indians are among the most under-insured in the world. The awareness has just started coming and this sector is going to take aquantum leap in the coming years. Financial sector is also bound to grow since it will be servicing these growing sectors and other fast-growing sectors as well. This translates into the availability of  lakhs of jobs for the fresh graduates as well as for the experienced personnel.
 
Withthis in mind, and to bridge the gap between knowledge and employability, the Rotary Club of Secunderabad West brought together stalwarts in the industry to address the students. The seminar was inaugurated by Retd. Chief Justice of Karnataka Shri Y.Bhaskar Rao, presently associated with the Bhartiya Vidya Bhavan’s Hyderabad Kendra. Shri Vepa Kamesam, Director of  IIRM set the mood for the seminar by delivering the keynote address. He drew heavily from his experience withthe State Bank of India and with IIRM to explain the skills needed by these industries. 

EarlierPresident Rtn.M.S.Raghava of Rotary Club of Secunderabad West welcomed the dignitaries and the delegates and set the tone for the Seminar. Rtn.Sekkizhar, Event Chair for this seminar in his inimitable style underlined the objectives of the Seminar.  Secretary -.Anil Kumar proposed the vote of thanks.

The technical sessions were well-structured with Shri K.Sridhar of TalentSprint speaking about the Financial Services industry requirements through his colorful presentation. Shri M.S.Reddi, Regional Head (Corporate Solutions), Aditya Birla Insurance Brokers Ltd. Spoke gave an elaborate account of Life and General Insurance and the opportunities / skills required in this sector.

Shri C.V.Sriram, Chief Manager & Faculty State Bank Staff College, elucidated on what the public sector banking industry expects from its prospective employees focusing on aspects related to Knowledge, Skill and Attitude.

Shri Haranath, Vice President Axis Bank, gave an insight into the functioning of the privatesector banks and the special expectations these have from their prospective employees.

Shri Jacob, GM. SBH spokeabout the public sector banking industry. He outlined the career opportunities and the skills needed with specific reference to the competitive exams conducted by banks and Group Discussion/Interview preparation. With few practical examples he explained in a beautiful wayon the skills and approach to qualify through the Group discussion and interview.
 
Senior Rotarian Shri K.L.Manohar, Chairman Rotary Seva Trust gave some words of wisdom to thedelegates. He emphasized ethical behavior, sincerity, honesty and ability to work hard as the sure formula for success.

These sessions were followed by a very lively question & answer session and the students participated with gusto.

Around15 books were given as Lucky Dip gifts to the Seminar. Towards end of the Seminar, President Rtn.Raghava called upon all the Rotarians to the stage for recognizing their excellent contributions in making this Seminar a grand success. The Seminar ended with National Anthem.

Though the Seminar got extended until 2:30 PM, it was inspiring to find the students staying back until the end of the Seminar. On the whole, it was a very useful and informative event and the students who attended it felt enriched at the end of the session.

The feedback forms received from the students indicated that this was a very informative and excellent seminar.

The seminar was a great event for our club and 30 Rotarians along with few Anns and Annetts attended the same. Infact since two months before the Seminar, our Rotarians had been putting great efforts in getting Sponsors, arranging speakers, making Seminar arrangements etc. There was great involvement of Rotarians in Seminar in all stages and it was a wonderful example of perfect team work.
