The Seminar on "Career Options in IT Enabled Services"(held on 26 Sep 2010 at Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan) enlightened the students on various opportunities in IT Enabled services industry and highlighted the skills they need to acquire to build a succesful career.The well attended Seminar was termed a very informative and useful by the participants.

Rotary Club of Secunderabad West scored a success for the fifth time in succession by organizing a seminar on "Career Options in IT-enabled Services". The heavens were kind and there was no rain in the morning. Students started coming in from 7:45 AM. Some parents and teachers/lecturers were also seen in the audience. Earlier, the Rotarians and the volunteers were busy getting the place ready for the seminar.
Since August, the Rotarians of Rotary Club of Secunderabad West fanned out and visited various colleges to impress upon the students the importance of the seminar. They also seized the opportunity to explain about the Rotary Organisation. With most colleges, it has become an annual ritual and they look forward to these visits by our Rotarians. The students are eager to volunteer for the seminar work.
The inaugural session began with the lighting of the lamp symbolizing the spread of knowledge, by the dignitaries on the dais. At the same time, the famous prayer song "Hum ko man ki shakti dena ." was played with the words appearing on the screen along with the meaning in English. This was an innovation. President, Rtn.D.J.Desai, welcomed the dignitaries and the participants. He explained that the choice of the subject was topical since the sector was poised for a phenomenal growth. He also thanked the District Governor and other dignitaries, the Chairman of the Rotary Seva Trust, Rtn.K.L.Manohar (who could not come to the seminar due to unavoidable reasons) and the sponsors for the event - Cognizant, Andhra Bank and Deloitte.
The Event Chair, Rtn.K.Prabhakar, had earlier introduced the topic. Asst.Governor, Rtn.N.Sivakumar spoke about the various Rotary projects available for youth participation. He felt that once the youth participated in such projects, they went on to become dedicated Rotarians.
The keynote speaker Shri L.Suresh, Managing Director of Infozon Systems Pvt.Ltd. and President of ITSAP (formerly HYSEA) was introduced by Secretary Rtn.Dr.G.S.S.Prakash. Shri Suresh set the tone for the day's discussions. He traced the origin and development of ITeS industries and explained regarding the high-end and low-end of the entire spectrum of IT-enabled Services. He went on to elaborate on the skills and qualifications required. The presentation evinced a lot of interest among the audience and the question-answer session that followed had a lot of participation.
Rtn.R.P. Baghavan introduced Shri Narasimha Rao ,Trustee, LeadIndia2020.Shri Narasimha Rao spoke about "Going Beyond Academic Syllabus for ITeS Careers". Drawing from his own experiences in the USA and India, he explained about some pre-requisites which are often ignored - Attitude, Typing, Competency in English, Competency in Mathematics. He made the audience repeat some sentences after him to imprint their minds with theidea. He cautioned against getting apprehensive, like when he was speaking about English competency, he said it is needed but one need not be afraid. He said that, in future, if China starts outsourcing, we may have to learn Chinese. His interactive style went down well with the young crowd.
The first lady of the Club Rtn.Naina Desai introduced District Governor, RI District 3150, Rtn.Rajyalakshmi Vadlamani,to the audience. Rtn.Rajyalakshmi chose to address the youngsters as a mother. She adopted a novel style and called upon three students to tell the audience what came to their mind when she held up a pencil. The replies were very interesting - one thought the ability to rub and modify was the strength and another referred to the Hindi movie "3 Idiots" and said that it could be used in the zero gravity situation. She appreciated their efforts and went on to relate how a six-year old in a village near Guntur perceived the pencil as a tool of learning. She gave her own example and exhorted the girls to fully utilize the opportunity that these present times are providing them. She felt Rotary should concentrate on youth and their development as they are the future. She appreciated the Rotary Club of Secunderabad West for conducting this seminar for the benefit of youth.
Secretary Rtn.G.S.S.Prakash proposed the vote of thanks and the inaugural session was concluded.
After the snacks break, Jt.Secretary Rtn.Anil Kumar, Event Co-Chair introduced the first technical session. Rtn.Deepak P.Ranade introduced the speaker Shri P. Venkateswara Rao, Managing Director of Vasavi Prosoft Transcriptions Ltd.and his two associates Shri Kalyan and Shri Ajay. This trio spoke about"How to develop skills for Voice-based Professional Services". They drew from their rich experiences and gave a lot of input to the delegates.
Director(Service Projects) of our Club, Rtn.K.Prabhakar Rao, Event Chair, introduced Shri K.Purna Chandra Rao, Sr.Director, Capital IQ.This was a swing to the other end of the spectrum. They related to financial applications in the field of ITeS. The topic was "Get Ready for Analysis of Fundamental data and Corporate Information to support Institutional Investors". The audience was enthused to know that such avast field exists and that it regularly hires new persons with high qualifications and the proper skills.
The third technical session was introduced by Jt.Secretary Rtn.S.Anil Kumar, Event Co-Chair. The speaker Shri A.V.Vedpuriswar, Director (Learning and Development) of Cognizant Academy - Cognizant was introduced by Vice-President Rtn.M.S.Raghava. This speaker did not use any presentation props, but held the audience's attention. He spoke about "Aligning Careers with skills, values and life interests". He drove home the mantra of hard work and ethics and values. He emphasized team work and attention to detail. He said communication was very important and warned the youngsters not to carry forward their short forms in SMS communications into their official communications. Clarity of communication is very important. He also posed the question, "Do we know what we want to do?" Once we know, we have to prepare for it. This technical session will remain imprinted on the young minds for along time.
The fourth Session was introduced by Rtn.K.Prabhakar Rao and the speaker Shri Vikas Gupta, Vice-President - Talent,Deloitte U.S.India Offices, Deloitte was introduced by Rtn.Vikas Singh Bayas. Shri Vikas Gupta began by screening a small video clip about Deloitte. He then spoke about the Hindi movie "3 Idiots" and gave a new insight when he discussed about the dedication of the Principal in the movie. He spoke about "Career Opportunities in Professional Services Industry". He advised the youngsters to enjoy what they do and be in love with the work. He felt they should own their career, that is, be in-charge of it. He asked them to stretch beyond their capability and asked them to hold tight to their values. Finally, he asked them to always learn by having mentors and also advised them to, in turn, mentor others. These, he felt were the most important factors.
Rtn.S.Anil Kumar introduced Session 5 and Director (PR) Rtn.R.Vijayanandan Reddy introduced the speaker Shri J.Jagan Mohan, Treasurer LeadIndia2020. Shri Jagan Mohan spoke on "How your values impact your success in career and life". A wonderful piece of advice at the conclusion of the seminar.
The technical sessions were followed by Q & A session with all the speakers. The questions just went on coming, a proof that the younger generation is very much conscious of moulding their careers. A lucky dip was organized and books were presented to the lucky winners.
Rtn.K.Prabhakar Rao summed up the entire proceedings in just two slides. He listed out the important points mentioned by the various speakers. It was indeed as if someone has gathered the core of all the ideas presented during the day.
At the conclusion of the seminar, President Rtn.D.J.Desai took the mike and appreciated the planning and execution of the seminar by Event Chair Rtn.K.Prabhakar Rao and co-Chair Rtn.Anil Kumar. The President was all praise for their efforts at conducting this seminar successfully. He went on to introduce all the members of Rotary Club of Secunderabad West who were present and explained how each of them had contributed to this achievement. The seminar concluded with the national anthem.
Some scraps of conversation overheard as the delegates were leaving the hall reveal the true picture. One boy to another "Awesome, yaar". A boy on the phone speaking to his parents "Chaala manchi seminar ayinidi. Upayoga padthadi. Thinaniki baaga ichharu" (It was a good seminar. Useful. Good eatables were provided). Girls discussing among themselves, "Bahut achcha tha." (It was very good). The members of the Rotary Club of Secunderabad West must be really feeling fulfilled when they heard these comments.
The feedback forms were collected from the participants and participants have appreciated the speakers and the informative sessions. Also participants gave top rating for all the arrangements for the seminar by Rotary club of Secunderabad West.
So, the fifth feather has been added to the cap of Rotary Club of Secunderabad West which conducts this seminar every year.Since last year, these seminars are being conducted under the auspices of Rotary Seva Trust, which is a trust sponsored by the Club for doing service projects. Some of the members were already planning for the next September. This is, indeed the Rotary Spirit in action.
